The Story
Saint Brendan is the patron saint of sailors, travelers and whales.
Legends aside, there is no question that Saint Brendan was a remarkable sailor and adventurer. In the sixth century, Brendan is said to have set out across the Atlantic Ocean in search of the Garden of Eden. Some claim he made it as far as North America, but regardless, he came back describing rivers of ice (icebergs) and mountains of fire (volcanoes). The sixteen monks who accompanied him credit Brendan for miraculously finding islands rich in vegetation, thus saving them from certain starvation.
