Saint Charles is the patron saint of converts and torture victims.
In 1886, under the reign of the cruel and predatory King Mwamba, Saint Charles was a page working for Anglican missionaries in Uganda. Charles, who often protected the other pages from the king's sexual advances, secretly baptised pages who had been condemned to death. The king ordered Charles himself to be burned alive, but as the flames blackened his flesh, Charles said to the crowd, "It is as if you are pouring water on me. Repent and become a Christian like me."
